HEMSI's 911 Communications Center

Accredited Center of Excellence

The 911 Center houses Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs) who play a vital role in the pre-hospital EMS system and get information from callers to determine location, nature, and priority of the medical emergency.

EMDs use “Pre-Arrival” instructions to provide critical dispatch life support instructions over the telephone while rescue units are en route to the call. Dispatchers are trained to instruct callers how to do Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), maintain airways, deliver a child, control serious bleeding, and provide instructions for choking victims.

  • Identifies and dispatches the closest available EMS response unit

  • Uses the Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL) system

  • Allows faster ambulance response to the 911 emergency

The center’s Geographical Information System (GIS) works in conjunction with the AVL by tracking all ambulances geographically for the most efficient response and timely patient care.
